Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women

Making Work with a Purpose.

The MMIW Movement is an ongoing epidemic that has been affecting Native people since colonization. As a Native American, I wanted to find a way to contribute. This effort took some time, and is ongoing, but my thinking is let’s get to work and start making an impact and we will have time to fine tune as we go along.

For this project I am creating artworks to be sold on products in which 50% of the profit will be donated to various Native run organizations for the lifetime of the sales.

The Work:

Aesthetic: Contemporary, striking Native imagery with a direct call to action to support the MMIW movement. Bold colors including specific reds and yellows to incorporate Native culture while deepening branding and taking color psychology into account with the red representing excitement, energy and passion and the yellow encourages enthusiasm, opportunity and positivity.

Primary Target Audience: Outspoken, Native American activists, influencers and community members.

Secondary Target Audience: Equality minded, justice seeking individuals that want to support and empower Native businesses, creatives and make a positive impact on the world.

Graphic Design Process: Through the branding of this project I developed a specific color palette that is used across the designs, donation badges and supporting marketing materials. This approach strengthens branding and reenforces that no matter where you are seeing these pieces, you know they are all related and there is zero confusion on where the consumer is supposed to be. This is an ongoing approach that is utilized in layers throughout all of my design work. I hand lettered all the text, apart from my logo, to match the art style and incorporated history, culture and depictions accurately in the work.

The supporting materials for this project included making specific branded art for organizations that I will be donating to as well all the research, copy, linking and info included in all materials. I also mocked up the designs digitally and set up the store, with all the sizing, garments and pricing. This included a recreation, animated version of the logo of the first organization I will be donating to.
